Car Battery Amp Hours Meaning

Similarly, a battery with a specification that reads “150 ah @ 15 hours” will provide 10 amps of current at a useable voltage continuously for 15 hours. It is the energy a battery can deliver continuously for 20 hours at 80°f without falling below 10.5. The amperage capacity of a car battery is measured in two different ways:

So a 2ah battery can draw two amps for an hour before it runs out, or four amps for half an hour. An ampere is a unit of measure of the rate of electron flow or current in an electrical conductor. It is a battery industry rating used to determine the ability of the battery to start or crank up an engine when the weather is cold.

The unit of measure for a battery's electrical storage capacity, obtained by multiplying the current in amps by the time in hours of discharge. A battery with 150 amp hours rating would provide 15 amps for 10 hours, 10 amps for 15 hours or 150 amps for 1 hour. If a battery is rated as 100ah, it will produce.

The most common span of time for amp hour ratings is 20 hours. Rc and ah are not one in the same as i often see people use them interchangeably. The power and longevity of a battery is noted by its amp hour (ah) rating.

For example if a battery is rated as, say 8ah, it will be able to provide 4 amps for 2 hours. This is often referred to as the ‘capacity‘ of a battery. For most passenger cars, the battery cca will fall between 400 and 600.

It should be noted that a useable voltage is considered to about 10.5 volts and above on a battery that is under load (or has devices connected). When looking at amp hours, the listing should specify the span of hours. Make sure you’re looking at the right type of battery.

An ampere hour (abbreviated ah, or sometimes amp hour) is the amount of energy charge in a battery that will allow one ampere of current to flow for one hour. Starting batteries, on the other hand, are typically rated at 10hr rate, because they are used faster, so the 20hr rate is not as important. A battery delivering 10 amps for 20 hours = 10 amps x 20 hours = 200 ah.

Battery life/longevity is a constant topic of frustration for sailors. What makes this even more frustrating is the confusion between reserve capacity (rc) and amp hours (ah). Having defined the ah specification, it is important to understand what the battery.

Most automobile batteries have a capacity of between 45 and 50 amp hours. Amp hours divided by amps tell us the battery life in hours. A unit of measure for a battery’s electrical storage capacity, obtained by multiplying the current in amperes by the time in hours of discharge.

Amp hour or c20 is an indicator of how much energy is stored in a battery. An average car battery has a capacity of around 48 amp hours which means that, fully charged, it delivers 1 amp for 48 hours, 2 amps for 24 hours, 8 amps for 6 hours and so on. Basically, this denotes how long a battery will last if it isn’t recharged.

Typically, car batteries are rated in ca or cca (cranking amps, or cold cranking amps) and not in ah (amp hours) like a deep cycle battery for powering appliances or electronics. For large batteries, the rating is abbreviated as ah. Cca stands for cold cranking amps.

For instance, in the ideal world, this rating would mean that if you have a 33ah 12 volt battery, you should be able to supply 33 amps (~412 watts) out of it for 1.
